Plastic Free July: How You Can Join the Movement for a Healthier Planet and Body

Every July, I join millions of people around the world in supporting Plastic Free July, a movement that empowers us all to rethink our relationship with single-use plastics.

As a doctor, health coach, and passionate advocate for sustainable living, I see firsthand how the choices we make for the planet are deeply connected to our well-being. This month, I invite you to take small, meaningful steps toward a plastic-free lifestyle, not just for the environment, but for your health and the health of future generations.

Why Does Plastic Free July Matter?

The numbers are staggering: billions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in our oceans each year, harming wildlife, contaminating food systems, and polluting our communities. Plastics don’t simply disappear; they break down into microplastics, which are now found everywhere from the deepest ocean trenches to the food on our plates. Research suggests that microplastics may pose risks to human health, including hormone disruption and inflammation.

But here’s the good news: every action, no matter how small, can make a difference. By minimizing single-use plastics, reducing synthetic clothing, using reusable water bottles and filters, we reduce demand, encourage businesses to adopt greener practices, and help protect our planet for future generations.

The Link Between a Plastic-Free Life and Better Health

Reducing plastic isn’t just good for the environment; it’s also good for your health. Many plastics leach chemicals, such as BPA and phthalates, that can disrupt hormones and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. By choosing glass, stainless steel, or natural fibers, you’re also protecting yourself and your family from unnecessary chemical exposure.

As someone deeply rooted in culinary and lifestyle medicine, I see how small changes add up. Swapping out plastic food containers, cooking more meals at home, reducing seafood consumption, and adopting a more plant-forward diet can reduce your exposure to toxins and enhance your overall well-being.

How to Participate in Plastic Free July

You don’t have to be an eco-warrior to get started. Here are some practical, manageable ways I recommend to join the movement this July:

1. Start with Simple Swaps

  • Replace plastic shopping bags with reusable totes.

  • Carry a refillable water bottle instead of buying bottled drinks.

  • Use a reusable coffee cup for your daily beverages.

  • Opt for beeswax wraps or glass containers instead of plastic wrap.

2. Shop Smart

  • Buy in bulk to reduce packaging waste.

  • Choose products with minimal or compostable packaging.

  • Support local farmers’ markets where produce is often sold without plastic.

3. Rethink Your Kitchen

  • Store leftovers in glass or stainless steel containers.

  • Use cloth napkins and towels instead of paper or plastic-based alternatives.

  • Compost food scraps to reduce reliance on plastic trash bags.

4. Get Involved and Spread the Word

  • Share your journey on social media using hashtags like #PlasticFreeJuly and #ChooseToRefuse.

  • Organize or join a local clean-up event.

  • Host a plastic-free cooking workshop or potluck with friends.

Cooking for Change: The Empowered Kitchen Cookbook

If you’re looking for more inspiration to live and eat sustainably, I encourage you to check out my upcoming cookbook, “Empowered Kitchen.” All proceeds once published from “Empowered Kitchen” will support reforestation partners & ocean plastic clean-up partners. By preordering a copy, you’re not only investing in your health but also helping to drive positive change for our environment and the future of healthcare.

Ready to Take the Challenge?

Plastic Free July is about progress, not perfection. Whether you’re swapping out one item or overhauling your daily routine, every step counts. Together, we can create a ripple effect that leads to healthier bodies, healthier communities, and a healthier planet.
